Surrogacy by the numbers

Employer support for surrogacy journeys and the financial, legal, and medical complexities involved are essential to inclusive benefits.

In 2023, 35% of employers planned to add or enhance their surrogacy coverage.

The average cost of a successful, first-attempt surrogacy pregnancy starts at $134,000.

As many as 63% of LGBTQ+ people planning families expect to use assisted reproductive technology, foster care, or adoption to become parents.

How gestational surrogacy works

In gestational surrogacy, an intended parent or parents work with a person who carries a pregnancy for them. Embryos are created using genetic material from the intended parent(s) or a donor and then transferred to a gestational carrier through in vitro fertilization (IVF). Surrogacy is an important option for people experiencing infertility, single parents by choice, same-sex couples, and others unable to carry a pregnancy.

Surrogacy laws vary around the world

Many countries — and some U.S. states — have restrictions related to surrogacy. Carrot Experts help members understand their local and cross-border options, when appropriate, and find trustworthy agencies and legal support.
